Know Your Rights: Resources from the National Lawyers Guild

Navigating interactions with law enforcement and other authority figures can be overwhelming and intimidating. The National Lawyers Guild (NLG) has created a range of resources to help individuals understand their rights and assess the risks involved in legal encounters. These materials are designed to provide critical information for those participating in protests, facing traffic stops, or dealing with federal authorities.

What is the National Lawyers Guild?

The National Lawyers Guild (NLG) is a progressive legal organization that has been providing legal support and advocacy for social movements since 1937. The NLG is committed to protecting and advancing human rights over property interests and has been a crucial ally in the fight against police misconduct, racial injustice, and political repression. Through their Mass Defense Program, they offer legal support, trainings, and resources for activists, ensuring they have the knowledge to make informed decisions when dealing with law enforcement.

Know Your Rights vs. Know Your Risks

The NLG acknowledges that legal rights on paper do not always translate into protections in practice. Law enforcement officers often violate these rights with little to no accountability. Because of this reality, the NLG now frames these materials as “Know Your Risks” (KYR), equipping individuals with not only an understanding of their legal rights but also an awareness of potential risks when asserting them.

Available Resources

The NLG has developed and compiled several comprehensive guides and booklets, including:

  • Legal Steps & Choices Guide: Originally developed by the Midnight Special Legal Collective and updated by the NLG, this guide walks individuals through the criminal legal process and offers advice on how to navigate it while maintaining autonomy and dignity.
  • Know Your Rights for Protesters: A detailed booklet designed to help individuals prepare for protests and demonstrations, especially those at higher risk of being targeted by law enforcement.
  • KYR Guide to Traffic Stops: Created by the NLG Arkansas Chapter, this guide explains what to expect and how to respond when stopped by police while driving.
  • Resources for Noncitizens and Minors: These materials address specific legal risks faced by immigrants and young people when interacting with law enforcement.

All of these resources are available for free download on the NLG website. Click the link below to access their full collection of PDFs and ensure you are informed and prepared when facing police or government authorities.
